The next three days, as the accompanying officer had forewarned them, were jam-packed with trips to electrical power plants. Top scientists were called upon to update Madani and the professor on the latest developments in the structure of nuclear power plants. Madani listened with interest to what the Russians and Ukrainians had learned from analyses of the Chernobyl disaster. From time to time, the professor whispered technical explanations of the complex details of the summary. Madani was astounded by the descriptions of sacrifice and dedication of those who had been brought in to clean up the epic radioactive breakdown that resulted in the deaths of so many of them. A particularly important aspect of the visit was how to handle the nuclear fuel prior to installation in the core, and storage of the fuel after it had served its purpose. Preparing the fuel rods for Iran’s power reactors at the site near Bushehr was outlined in detail. Also the absorption and storage of the irradiated fuel, after it finished its role in the reactor core was presented as the latest word in the technology of power reactors. Madani’s questions related to nuclear weapons development, however, were treated politely, but without actual substance.

“President Putin has asked to meet with you personally in his office within the hour.” Madani was informed by the accompanying officer when the visits to the nuclear facilities were complete. Madani was pleased but concerned about this completely unexpected invitation.

“What might Putin bring up in a meeting with me?” Madani wondered as he turned to the professor. “Perhaps this is an opening to the more strategic issues? Maybe it is concerning the hypersonic cruise missiles?”

“Maybe,” replied the professor, “but it is possible that he will raise the issue of aid to Syria and a call for more intensive activity in the face of attacks by the Israeli

Air Force.”

“I am glad to meet you, Doctor Madani,” Putin said, shaking Madan’s hand with unexpected force. “I want to raise an issue,” the president hastened to add. “And you, in your position with the supreme leader, will be able to deliver the message the best way possible.”

“Certainly, Mr. President, of course, I will convey it with pleasure.”

“This concerns the political and military aid we provide to Syria,” Putin began as he waited for his words to be translated. “Recently, we have seen serious involvement not only of Israel, but mainly from the United States in supporting the Syrian rebel organizations. We have the Syrian army and the welcome involvement of Hezbollah fighters, but this is not enough. You must do more to support al-Assad without obliging us to enter into armed conflict with the United States. My request, Doctor Madani, comes with our recognition of your country’s indisputable influence in the region,” he complimented his guest. “and I’m sure you will know how to raise Iran’s level of aid to the Syrian regime.”

“Without question, your honor, the message will be delivered as soon as possible to the supreme leader.”

“You have my trust, Comrade Madani,” Putin chose the sobriquet reserved for Russian officials.
